The beauty of Spain is the diversity it can
offer couples when it comes to the type of ceremony they would like.
There has been much confusion over whether or not an Irish couple
can have their Spanish wedding legally recognised in Ireland, or
in some cases, whether they will be allowed to marry in Spain without
being a resident!
Here are the facts:
Catholic Wedding
The good news is that it is possible to have a catholic
wedding in Spain. You should allow four months to complete the paperwork,
but the more notice you can give us the better. It is the same process
as if you wish to get married outside your own parish at home. You
must first talk to your own parish priest, complete paperwork and
he will then pass this to the bishop in Malaga. Once the wedding
is completed, the papers must be lodged with the Civil Registry
in the locality in Spain in which you have married to legalise the
wedding. As at home, permission must be requested from your parish
priest if one member of the couple is not catholic. The good news
is that we will manage this paperwork for you so don't worry!
Civil Cermony
It is only possible to have a civil wedding in Spain if
you are a resident. As in Ireland, you must apply to the civil registry
where you wish to get married, and as usual, it can be a lengthy
and complicated process. Our advise is to avoid complication, have
a civil wedding at home, and opt for a blessing in Spain which can
be held in a stunning location in front of friends and family. After
all, you are declaring your love for each other in front of your
nearest and dearest. It shouldn't really matter what country you
have done the legal part in!
Blessing
We should have placed this first as it is our favourite!
A blessing is a ceremony carried out by a priest, a minister, a
rabbi, a friend or any other person chosen by the couple. It can
take place in a church, on a beach, at the side of a mountain, the
list is endless. The point is that it is personal and intimate,
and exactly as the couple wants. Many venues now offer a blessing
ceremony where the have outside pergolas, a red carpet and chairs
laid our in beautiful style, they even print the ceremony booklets.
A blessing is not legally binding and it must be preceded by a civil
wedding at home or in Gilbraltar.
Inter Faith and Gay Marriages
In our experience, no two couples are the same or have
the same requirements. As an interfaith couple ourselves, we exhausted
all possibilities and opted for a civil wedding followed by a large
reception. Gay couples can have a legally recognised civil wedding
in Spain, but the same residency issue applies. If you discuss you
particular situation with us, we are confident to provide you with
a list of options for your special day that will make you both happy.
Other Faith Weddings
Jewish - There are two syanagogues on the Costa del Sol,
one in Marbella and one in Torremolinos. A chuppa may also be erected
in any location chosen by the couple, but you should first talk
to your own rabbi about paperwork and making the ceremony legal.
We have access to kosher caterers and a list of venues that will
provide a kosher banquet. Protestant, buddhist other religions are
simular in that they must be backed up by a legal civil wedding.
